new information from pg&e at this hour about an outage effecting thousands in benicia. thousands left in the dark and cold. brutally cold once again and the freeze warning in place until 9:00 for most of the bay area. i will have a look at the temperatures coming up. i cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that nelson mandela set. and president obama joins millions of people around the world mourning the death of nelson mandela. the new information about his funeral. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues.

good morning and welcome back. boy, a huge power outage in benicia. you are looking at notes apologizing for the outage out there this morning. we just got an update from pg&e and the news is not good. boy, this comes at a terrible time with the overnight very cold temperatures for people to be without their power. claudine wong is out there this morning. she is talking with pg&e. we will go out to her in a moment. its friday, december 6th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm brian flores. dave clark has the day off. let's get a quick look at weather and traffic. rosemary in for steve. it is cold out there. >> you are right. bring along the winter coat once again. temperatures sinking into the 20s once again this morning. we are still about an hour and ten minutes away from the official sun vise. temperatures will remain this cold. at least between now and then.

fairfield sinking to 21 degrees. 28 in concord. 22 napa. mid 20s in novato. 23 santa rosa. around the bay upper 30s reported in mountain view, san francisco. freezing at half-moon bay. partly cloudy skies along the coastline. sign of changes coming our way. upper 20s walnut creek. 30 degrees outside your door in livermore. for us we were a tad warmer. last time around we went to the peninsula. this time we are going north. 29 degrees outside of your door in petaluma. 24 sebastopol. so again we are going to be this cold at least for the next hour. takes until about 8:00 before our temperatures budge a bit. we will still be really, really cool throughout the morning hours. this system here off the coast of washington going to bring changes to us as early as tonight. starting off with the freeze. increasing clouds coming our way. afternoon highs will be a lot

like where we have been yesterday. but then by tonight rain begins to move in. it looks like scattered showers perhaps in time for the evening drive home. the heaviest rain will fall in late tonight into the overnight hours. snow levels are going to be dropping. perhaps down to about 2500 feet. so we are going to continue to track this for you and i'll have a timeline of this rain coming up. we are still doing pretty well out there for the most part. we are getting slow traffic in places though as you can see at the bay bridge toll plaza. it does look like its slowing down especially in some of those outside lanes. the morning commute looks good if you are driving on the east shore freeway. it is atheize looking drive. the south bay northbound 101 and 280 still doing well. 87 and 85 getting into the valley. it is 6:03 let's go back to the desk. happening now the number of people without power in benicia

is continuing to grow. there are thousands of people in the dark and the cold. ktvu claudine wong is joining us now with new information from pg&e about when some people will get their power back on and what has caused this outage possibly. claudine. >> reporter: they are trying to figure it out. they have crews roaming the city of benicia. this is being confirmed as three separate outages. that number has grown. earlier it was at 1600 and then went to 3700 and now at 4100. it looks like by 6:45 so in a little bit there should be 1500 people without power. let me show you what is happening out here. this is usually a very busy place right around now with people looking to get coffee. this is starbucks. ons door they have a sign letting everyone know they called pg&e. but with the power being down they can't open the store because they cannot make coffee. look through the doors you can see one of the employees

hanging out. waiting for some of the power to come back on. at this point i don't know if this star bucks will be among the first to get back online. we did talk to pg&e this morning about what possibly is causing the problems. >> reporter: at this point we are investigating the cause but it appears as if the cause is related to a damaged under ground cable. >> reporter: so at this point we wait. it is very cold out here. a lot of people really have come out here and got out of their cars and stared a little lost at this dark door. trying to figure out why it won't open and why they can't get their coffee. obviously people have a little routine. on my phone it shows temperatures here at 30 degrees. so we will keep an eye on things for you. we will let you know when the power starts to come on for folks here in town. live in benicia claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. it was a watery mess over

night in martinez after a water main break sent water rushing through one neighborhoods. that happened around 9:30 last night. take a look at the amount of water rushing out of there. crews out there say cold weather and shifting ground caused the break. the water went right into the garage of one home, rushed through two businesses and at one point disrupted water service to about 50 homes. service was restored after a few hours but it took all night to make the repairs. we want to show you new video that we shot before 3:30 this morning of the area. crews leaving the scene after fixing that water main break and patching the street. they also put down some sand on a two block stretch. that is because all the water spilled was starting to ice over. shelters in sonoma county have added extra beds to keep homeless people out of the

cold. the county provides 580 beds year round. there are about 3300 homeless people in sonoma county. organizers say the conditions will make travel to the summit pretty hazardous. the ceremony will now take place at the oak room at the library at cal state east bay in concord. restored mountain top beacon will still light up tomorrow night. park rangers will get the queue from a radio call. this was supposed to be the first year of the event since the beacon was renovated. bad weather in the sierra foothills is causing pg&e to staff extra crews today as well. pg&e is concerned about a repeat of snowstorm four years ago that left thousands of people in the plasterville area without power for days. people are currently stocking up at hardware stores. >> i have actually decided to

test some new equipment i have for camping. so i have set up my tents and i will sleep there and make sure it works. >> law enforcement are also urging drivers to slow down and be cautious of icy roads and black ice. snow could drop to 1,000 feet by sunrise tomorrow. elevations above 2,000 feet could see three to eight inches of snow. the port of san francisco is sell chemotive bricks that will be use -- commemorative bricks that will be used at the port. the port says the money will help cover park costs including benches for visitors. a neighborhood activists says it will help pay off the city's debt for hosting the america's cup races. >> they are deceptive the way it is marketed. we want to make sure people have the facts >> it is money that is coming back to the port to help us with infrastructure costs that were put out. >> the park is scheduled to open late next year.

time is 6:08. south africa's government is preparing funeral services for nelson mandela who died yesterday at 95 years old. we are learning more about the funeral plans. there will be a ten-day mourning period. on day five there will be a memorial service in a stadium in . south africans visiting their embassy in washington, d.c. says their country owes a lot to mandela. >> his ability to forgive and bring people together brought us back from the brink. that is immeasurable. its hard to put into words what he did for us. >> president obama is expected to travel to south africa to attend the mel mother service for nelson mandela. mandela also had strong ties to the bay area.

he also said the movement by uc berkeley students back in 1986 calling on the university to divest more than $2.5 million from the south african government was a crucial step in ending apartheid. as soon as he was released from prison he paid a visit to the bay area. >> he carried off the presence as if he was totally unaware of how significant he really was. >> estimated 58,000 people turned out to see mandela at the oakland coliseum that day. nelson mandela was 95 years old. he had been ill off and on for more than a year. he passed peacefully surrounded by his family. new this morning an earthquake in napa but no, ma'am reports of any injuries or damage at this point. the earthquake measuring 3.7 shook the community of anguin.

already know. really? >> totally embarrassing for 49ers fans. five-time super bowl champions having to put out a memo on tow to behave. i will blame that on a rogue, over eager marketing director. >> reporter: some fans say this was the 49ers way of getting fans to cheer more loudly like sea hawks fans have been known for. many say it is just plain insulting. no comment from the 49ers organization. we do know this is a big road trip for seattle sea hawk fans and hundreds will flock to san francisco. they plan on taking over pier 39 and posing in front of a christmas tree with about 1,000 fans. you will definitely be seeing a lot of blue and green this weekend. but you will also see a lot of red and gold. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty. tickets for sunday's game not difficult to come by if you are willing to pay and pay quite a bit.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. a judge in marin county has agreed to delay the sentencing of max wade. he is 19-year-old man. wade was scheduled to be sentenced on december 16th ten days from now but his attorney asked the judge for time to prepare for his clients sentencing day. wade was convicted of stealing guy's $200,000 lamborghini know. if you think your grocery bill is high now, wait until the end of the year. a gallon of milk could cost $7 if congress does not pass a new farm bill.

president obama is optimistic a deal could be reached. the republican controlled house and the democratic controlled senate remain at odds over parts of the farm bill. especially cuts to the food stamp program. >> an opportunity for bipartisan cooperation on a comprehensive farm bill and hopes and expects that can be achieved before the end of the year. >> milk would not be the only item effected if there is no deal. all dairy products including butter, cheese, ice cream will soar along with corn, wheat, and soy beans. time is 6:17. and happening now cal trains holiday train making a return this weekend. you've got to love christmas in the bay area. it is so fantastic. this is a live look at the train that is is getting ready for its public debut starting tomorrow. the train is decorated with 60,000 lights and stop at nine stations between san francisco and santa clara. look at that.

santa, mrs. claus and their friends will be at each station. salvation army will be there to collect toy donations. the train begins its journey in san francisco at 4:00 on both saturday and sunday. >> i love that. >> i love that too. 6:17 is the time. sal, how is traffic on this friday morning? >> its doing well. toy want to mention something that we found out about in san jose pam and brian. in downtown san jose. there is some police activity. we want you to stay away from that area. the good thing we know now let's take a look at highway 24 westbound. no major problems driving up to the tunnel and the traffic is moving along nicely on 680. westbound bay bridge backed up

for a little bit less than ten minutes. if you are driving on to the upper deck traffic does look good into san francisco. the traffic will be a little slow on 580 westbound as you goal about 40 miles an hour here. and if you are driving on the nimitz freeway just a little bit of slow traffic here. not all that bad as you drive from hayward to fremont. let's go to rosemary. stepping outside this morning hold on just a moment. let's take a look at your temperature. the coldest spot right now fairfield 21 degrees. at least on this map here. if we go into napa take a look just 22 there. only slightly warmer. 23 novato. you get into concord 28. 30-degrees in livermore. go to the coast and it is cold

once again. even freezing in and around half-moon bay. very cold temperatures expected for your morning hours. into the afternoon we do have an increase in clouds coming our way. it will be just as cool as we were for the afternoon yesterday. but as we get into the second half of the day, we are looking at an increase in clouds and eventually a little bit of rain. notice we have more in the way of cloud cover. it could be high clouds. filtered sunshine. rain still to the north. but this system will be moving in and perhaps for the evening drive sprinkles falling over the area. the brunt of this system the

front moving n through tonight into tomorrow morning. as we get going tomorrow morning it is already gone. it is already out of here. we still have snow in the sierra. tonight into tomorrow morning above 2500 feet. we could see anywhere from a quarter inch of rain to a half inch. maybe three quarters with this system for the bay area. so that is good news. for the afternoon mainly dry. and the extended forecast with your bay area weekend always in view notice temperatures for the afternoon not going to change a whole lot. we will be slightly warmer in the overnight hours with the cloud cover and the rain. but as we get into saturday we are going to be drying out. sunday will be cold once again and temperatures slightly warmer.

americans spent three tenth of a percent. the rate dropped to 4.8% down almost a half of a percent in october. kohls says it will hold a shop-a-thon to help last minute christmas shoppers this year. all 1156 stores will open at 6:00 in the morning on christmas and stay open for 100 consecutive hour. meaning they won't close until 6:00 p.m. on christmas eve. coming up an outpouring of support. >> i break down and cry all the time because i can't believe the generosity. >> two girls in the same elementary school diagnosissed with cancer within days of each other. the amazing show support from

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:25 is the time. and scientists are concerned that water off the sonoma coast could become a dead zone for crab and fish a a lack of oxygen was detected in the water. scientists think climate change may be to blame for the low oxygen levels in the water. the city of pacifica is showing an outpouring of community support for duolittle girls both recently diagnosissed with cancer. eight-year-old bella hung was diagnosissed with leukemia the day before thanksgiving. a few days later annika johnson was diagnosissed with a rare form of kidney cancer.

both -- both are students at cabrillo elementary school. >> they are in the same hospital, the same floor. annika is in the same room bella just moved out of. >> people in pacifica set up a give forward page first for bella and then for annika. within a couple days they raised more than $30,000. the families say they are overwhelmed. we have breaking news from san jose to tell you about. a busy intersection is shut down. and also another story we are following its call the the knock out game. now we have spoken to an oakland man who says he was a victim of this disturbing crime. thousands remain in the dark and cold. what we are learning about the power outage.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. getting ready to ring that opening bell live in new york this morning. and they are ringing in a really good day for the dow, nasdaq, and s & p. there it is live. numbers the future stock right up after that jobs report came in. the unemployment rate down five year low now. the monthly numbers coming in for november this morning and it looks like the dow will be up 150 points right off the bat. time 6:30. good morning. thank you for joining us on the ktvu morning news i'm brian flores in for dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. rosemary orozco is in for steve as well today. talking about this cold weather. >> yes brewly tally cold once again. we have advisories.

this advisory is is for later. tonight into tomorrow. when snow is expected to fall over the sierra. but the shades of purple advisories once again a freeze warning in place. the only area not included san francisco. and you can see it here. through 9:00 or until 9:00 this morning freezing and sub freezing temperatures with the warning in place for the entire bay area excluding san francisco. low 20s from fairfield, napa, novato into santa rosa. 40 degrees san francisco. wide spread mid to upper 30s. and we're looking at upper 20s to about 30 degrees for our east bay locations as well. 32 degrees right now pittsburgh. san roe moan you are -- san ramon 27. 36 degrees in orinda. joined by very cold temperatures once again. we are still 40 minutes or so until the official sunrise. temperatures will be very cold. at least through 8:00. we will begin to see a turn around. big changes coming our way. this system here over off the

coast of washington are l be shifting south and east over the course of the day. by tonight it will bring us some rain. it will bring some snow to the sierra and snow down to our local level. i will say about 2,000 feet for our local hills. and then an advisory in place tonight for some of our local hills as well. more on that coming up in our extended forecast. today upper 40s to low 50s. 51 in fremont with increasing clouds and rain coming tonight. i will have a timeline on that rain. we have police activity in san jose downtown area. this is at the corner of san carlos street. let me push in a little farther here and let you know where this is. of course you probably already know if you drive the area. this intersection is shut down for police activity. we are trying to figure out what is going on. we do know there is a shut down and building traffic in this region. we will let you know more as we find out. this is close to highway 87 in

downtown. you may not want to take any of those exits nearby. let's take a look at live pictures. we have a slow down already at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have traffic that is backed up for a five to ten minute delay once you make it on to the bridge. and this morning's commute is not all that bad on highway 4. its little slow in antioch and bay point. now back to the desk. following breaking news from san jose. right now that intersection due top police activity. cd is heading to the -- janine de la vega is heading to the scene to try to find out what is happening there. thousands of people are in the dark and in the cold in benicia because of a major power outage. claudine wong is joining us live to tell us when some people could get power back and the possible cause for this

outage. claudine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it looks like 6:45 may be our best estimate for some people getting their power back on. when you talk about 4100 that are estimated to be out right now, that is still a lot of people waiting. take a look right now. we're in the south hampton shopping center. there are several businesses here. this is the starbucks that was supposed to open at 4:30 this morning. customers have been showing up one after another. alex we saw him inside sitting there just kind of waiting and hoping. pan over to the left here. i want to show you there is another business owner also waiting all the way to the left in that white truck. i just talked to those folks. that is a new restaurant opening up.

they are supposed to open up at 7:00. they've been calling pg&e too saying when are we going to get our power back on? what is going to happen? they are not getting a ton of answers right now. we have seen pg&e rolling through here. they think they might know what is causing the problem. >> at this point we are investigating the cause but it appears as if the cause is related to a damaged under ground cable. >> reporter: we did see a pg&e truck going through here. pg&e telling us they have crews in and around this area trying to find the source of the problem and trying to get it fixed. at last word they were saying they would let us know when some of the trouble crews are dispatched and until there is dispatched it could be a awhile. coming back out here live you can see a little bit of light out there. that is a pg&e truck. we don't know if they are doing work over there or just on stand by as they wait to figure out where to go. again this is a developing

situation with them still trying to find the source and problem that has been in police. live in benicia claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. some college students in the south bay had to battle the cold even after they made it into their classrooms. west valley community college in saratoga says pg&e told the school to cut its gas consumption by 25% so the utility could meet high demand in the area. the school lowered temperatures inside the buildings and administrators also sent a warning. >> so from a computer in central services we can lower and raise the temperatures and kind of default that for the whole campus. so people won't want to crank up the room temperature in the room when it is cold. >> cold temperatures are also taking a toll on the areas homeless. shelters were niece capacity in the south bay but managers say they made sure no one was turned away. last week it was black

friday, now folks in the southern part of the u.s. are calling today black ice friday. a wintery blast is pounding states including texas, oklahoma, and arkansas. many school districts closed flights in and out of the region have been canceled today. >> its obviously a safety concern when you have buses on the road with children in them. and mom and dad on the road trying to get kids to school. >> power has been knocked out to 100,000 homes and businesses with almost half in dallas. time is 6:37. it may soon cost more to ride bart. the bart board is looking into charging higher fares during the busiest hours when many commuters are heading to and from work or school. riders would also pay more at bart's busiest stations. the so-called peak hour premium plan is used in other u.s. cities including washington, d.c.. oakland man says he was the victim of a so-called knock out

game. where an attacker knocks out a total stranger. anthony lindsey tells us the brutal attack happened while he was riding a ac transit bus. the pictures show the cuts and bruises lindsey says he suffered after the man punched him several times. he wasn't robbed he was just beaten up. >> it was clear since he wanted nothing of mine, nothing that i owned that maybe -- that's what it felt like. it felt like i was trying to be knocked out. >> the alameda county sheriffs office is investigating this case and they are urging any witnesses to step forward. an amber alert has been issued in the bay area. 14-year-old elizabeth romero was last seen leaving her school wednesday afternoon in kenwick, washington. there is her picture on the screen. now police say surveillance video shows her into a car with

her boyfriend. the man on the screen there 19- year-old eduardo flores. he was last seen driving a 2001 to 2003 ford escape with temporary washington plates. investigators think the two could be heading to mexico and might drive through the bay area. continuing coverage now a south africa's government is preparing funeral ceremonies for nelson mandela who died yesterday at the age of 95. people have been gathering outside of mandela's home to remember the man who spent 27 years in prison fighting apartheid. and four years after his release became the country's first black president. president obama says he is one of the millions of people inspired by mandela. >> we've lost one of the most influential, courageous, and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. its 6:43. deputies in southern california have arrested an 18-year-old accused of stealing part of the porshe that fast and four cross star paul walker was in when he was killed in that crash. 25-year-old jamison was arrested at his l.a. area home yesterday. the wreckage of the 2005 porshe was being towed away after saturday's deadly crash when someone got out of a car that was following the tow truck, grabbed a part and drove away. that part was found in the person's home. retired santa clara county

superior court judge will lead a task force. cordell is also san jose independent police auditor. the president says the task force will review the facts and propose religions for insuring -- propose recommendations. four white students taunted their black roommate with racial slurs and put a u-shaped bicycle lock around his neck. healdsburg could be the first city to raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco. you must be at least 21 years old to buy tobacco. that is up from 18 years old. its designed to discourage teens from buying tobacco and smoking at an earlier age but the city says they first need to investigate the low galty before they --ly galty before they --ly galty before they can

healthy eating are huge. those stories coming up on mornings on 2. we want to get back to that breaking news out of san jose. right now the intersection of alma don boulevard and west san carlos street are closed due to police activity. janine de la vega is just arriving on the scene. janine, what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: the northbound lanes are closed because as you can see there has ban crash between a police car and another vehicle. what we are hearing from police about 5:45 that police officer in that car was sitting there at the light at san carlos when the other car crashed into him. rear ended him. the officer was in shock and at some point the driver of that other carp tried to get away. and a security guard from either a nearby hotel that was working around here was able to

dow jones up 138 points right now. 15,960. we called before the opening because of the good jobless numbers coming in. nasdaq up a half of a percent. and the s & p500 up a full percent. part of the reason the unemployment rate fell to a five-year last month. that report came in this morning from the labor department. employers added 203,000 jobs. ha helped drop the jobless rate to 7%. that is down from october. many of the new jobs high paying industries. manufactures added 27,000 positions. construction firms gained 17,000. jc penny says the secures and exchange commission is looking into its financial matters. and checking in on the news the stock is down about 4% this morning. its only trading at $8.48 a share. the struggling retailer says it received a letter from the sec

in october. jc penny says its cooperating and will provide all the requested information. it has been six days since the plane carrying a pilot from san jose and four members of his family went missing in the idaho wilderness. dale smith was flying from oregon to montana when he reported engine trouble and the plane disappeared. as many as 30 members of his family are helping with the search but freezing weather is making it difficult. >> rugged terrain out there. you know. got a lot of planes and helicopters and a lot of ground people working tirelessly to help find our loved ones and bring them back to us. >> smith is the cofounder of a data storage firm in san jose. two of his children were also on board as well as his daughter-in-law and future son- in-law. fremont police have arrested a suspect in a home burglary caught on video.

police say they arrested 28- year-old transient richard at a hotel room. he is the man seen in this video. the video reached 2,000 hits on youtube. after releasing the video, investigators received more than a dozen tips leading to his arrest. police say a number of home burglaries in hercules could be the work of one teenager. eight homes near peasant drive were broken into. it happened during the day when the homes were empty. one victim says he found the front door open and had cash and electronics missing. the thefts are so similar police believe there is one thief and he is likely 15 or 16eers old. bat kid is returning to san francisco but this time he won't be fighting in crime. miles scott will be back to support the san francisco police. on saturday he will be the special honoree at the event
